Fulfilling the Great Commission
Matthew 28:18-20 says, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.”
In these scriptures we are told by the Lord Jesus to go into all the nations and make disciples. A disciple is not only one who believes, but also adheres to the teachings and doctrine of the one he believes in. This is why the Lord said in verse twenty to teach the new believers to observe or practice the teachings of Jesus.
For us to be successful in fulfilling the Great Commission, I see two truths that we must embrace.
First, to make disciples we must be disciples.
We can only reproduce in others what is real in us. If I am not a doer of the teachings of Jesus, how can I impart their true meanings to others? The Apostle Paul said in Romans 1:15, “So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at
The second truth is found in verses eighteen and nineteen.
In these two verses the Lord reveals that upon His resurrection He has been given all rule, all authority and all power in heaven and in earth. The Lord then immediately delegates His authority over to His disciples. The word for authority here means delegated power, delegated influence, the power or right to act. The Lord Jesus has given believers the delegated right to act in His behalf to win the lost and build the
Mark 16:15-20 says, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”
Every believer has the right to use the Word of God and the Name of Jesus in their walk of service to the Lord. This is our inheritance and our purpose, to live for Jesus, do His works and bring others to Him.
It is time for us, the Church, the Disciples of Christ, Believers, to rise up in our authority and do the works of the Lord. Romans 8:19 says, “For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.” It is time for God’s true sons and daughters to manifest and be revealed. The Church is to be powerful in prayer and faith. We are here to make a difference, so step into the authority the Lord has given you and dare to act like a disciple of Jesus. When you do, signs will follow you, circumstances and lives will be changed and Jesus will be glorified!
